15 Day Kimberley Accommodated Tour

To commence your tour, we will collect you from your Broome accommodation at 7.30am. We call into Beagle Bay to see the beautiful pearl shell altar at the Sacred Heart Church built by the German Pallotine monks in 1917-18. Continuing towards Cape Leveque, we detour to enjoy a tour of the Cygnet Bay Pearl Farm, followed by lunch. Our final destination for the day is Cape Leveque, where we will enjoy a glass or two while viewing the spectacular sunset from the western beach.

Overnight: Kooljaman at Cape Leveque
Meals: Lunch, Dinner

Today you are free to explore the Cape Leveque area; have a swim or walk the beaches. Kooljaman at Cape Leveque is one of the few places on land where you can watch the sunset and sunrise over water. We will join a tour of the One Arm Point Hatchery, to see how the traditional custodians are working on conserving their marine life. The Cape Leveque sunset is worth seeing at least twice, so you can enjoy it again over dinner.

Departing early, we retrace part of our journey and drive to Derby to see the Boab Prison Tree, which is estimated to be 1000 years old. Following morning tea, we take a short drive to the Mowanjum Aboriginal Art Gallery so you can peruse the exquisite pieces and learn about the traditional art history of this area.

Our next destination is Windjana Gorge, a stunning gorge cut through the Napier Range. This site holds special significance to the local Aboriginal people. The gorge is 3.5 km long and formed by the Lennard River as it winds its way through the Napier Range. There are primeval life forms fossilised within the gorge walls. Isolated pools in the ‘dry’ season, support an abundance of wildlife including freshwater crocodiles, water birds, corellas and a colony of fruit bats. We will take a walk up the gorge and then continue to our overnight stay at Bell Gorge Wilderness Lodge.

Overnight: Bell Gorge Wilderness Lodge
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

On Day 4, we take a short drive before we begin our hike to Bell Gorge. Eroded into the King Leopold Range, Bell Gorge is one of the most impressive gorges in the Kimberley. Bell Creek cascades down through a series of falls and pools. There is time to enjoy a beautiful early morning swim to cool down before we continue.

This evening we will stay at the Mornington Wilderness Camp, owned by the Australian Wildlife Conservancy. Nestled away in the pristine Kimberley bushland, Mornington is a great place to observe abundant birdlife. The rest of the afternoon will be spent around Mornington Wilderness Camp, exploring various walking trails.

We are privileged to spend the day exploring the Mornington Wildlife Sanctuary. We depart camp in the morning with a packed lunch and make our way to Diamond Gorge for a canoe trip along where the Fitzroy River cuts through the King Leopold Ranges. Abundant birdlife, large cliffs and pristine scenery is just the beginning. In the afternoon you have the option of visiting Sir John Gorge for a swim, take a short walk around camp or simply relax at your safari tent – the choice is yours.

Following breakfast, we return back to the Gibb River Road and continue to the grand Galvans Gorge for a short hike and swim before reaching the Barnett River for lunch. After lunch we begin our journey along the Kalumburu Road to our evening destination at Drysdale River Station, where we pull a seat up at the bar and mingle with the locals.

The drive along the Port Warrender Road will be slow and steady to the Mitchell Plateau. The roads are a perfect example of 4WD terrain. We cross the King Edward River and spend part of the day exploring amazing Aboriginal rock art and enjoy lunch on the banks of the river where you can have a swim if desired. We continue along the Port Warrender Road before arriving at our evening destination at the Mitchell Falls Wilderness Lodge, wonderfully set amongst bushland.

On Day 8, we explore the Mitchell Plateau and the outstanding Mitchell Falls. The scenery is remarkable and contains more impressive examples of Aboriginal rock art. Today we retrace back down the Kalumburu Road to re-join the Gibb River Road. Along the way we will be presented with wonderful views of the Kimberley and Cockburn Range. Our evening involves an extravagant viewing of sunset over the Cockburn Ranges followed by nightly entertainment at the ‘local watering hole’, the Dusty Bar and Grill.

Day 10 continues our journey along the Gibb River Road. We have an early morning swim at the stunning Zebedee thermal springs, followed by a three-hour hike into El Questro Gorge. This afternoon you will have the opportunity to either walk up Emma Gorge, catch up on laundry or simply relax on the banks of the Pentecost River.

Overnight: El Questro Wilderness Park
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

We arrive into Kununurra mid-morning, where you will enjoy a walk through town to visit art galleries and check out the Argyle diamonds, before joining a ¾ day boat cruise of the Ord River. The cruise navigates 55km of river between Kununurra and Lake Argyle. You will see an ecological system that has developed from the damming of the Ord River. The tour concludes with a scenic coach tour through ‘Durack Country’ to Lake Argyle before returning to our evening accommodation.

Overnight: Kimberley Grande, Kununurra
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Our drive today takes us into the magnificent World Heritage Listed Purnululu National Park (Bungle Bungles). The Bungle Bungle Range is renowned for its striking orange and grey horizontal banded domes. The distinctive beehive-shaped landforms have been produced by uplift and erosion over the last 20 million years.

In the evening we will watch the sunset behind the Bungle Bungle Ranges, while enjoying a glass of Champagne before returning to our evening accommodation.

Overnight: Purnululu (Bungle Bungles)
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

After breakfast, we spend the day walking and exploring the magnificent beehive formations of this World Heritage Listed region. This will include hikes into Echidna Chasm, Cathedral Gorge and Piccaninny Creek Lookout. Up until 1982 the region was largely ‘undiscovered’. Prior to 1982 only local Aboriginal people and a handful of stockmen knew of the area and in 1987 it became a National Park. An unforgettable helicopter flight over the Bungles is highly recommended and available at an extra cost.

Overnight: Purnululu (Bungle Bungles)
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Leaving Purnululu we make our way to Halls Creek for morning tea and refreshments. We travel along the Great Northern Highway to Fitzroy Crossing, stopping for lunch and enjoying the views. Our evening destination, the Fitzroy River Lodge, is a beautiful oasis nestled along the banks of the river where you are welcome to take a short evening walk.

Overnight: Fitzroy River Lodge
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

The final day takes you on a boat tour down the Fitzroy River through Geikie Gorge, offering marvellous views and photo opportunities. We then make our way to Tunnel Creek which flows through a water worn tunnel beneath the limestone of the Napier Range. Tunnel Creek is part of the 350-375 million year old Devonian Reef, formed when most of the Kimberley was covered by the sea and gradually exposed as the sea level fell to its present level.

Tunnel Creek was the hideout for Jandamarra (Pigeon) who led the Aboriginal resistance against the police and pastoralists until he was tracked down and killed by a police posse in 1897. We will walk 750 metres through the tunnel, wading through several permanent pools to the other side of Napier Range.
We return to Broome early evening and will say farewell after taking you to your accommodation.
